The GeForce RTX 3080 is the fastest consumer gpu ever released. Its performance in reviews released today is excellent, it has a significant advantage over a hugely more expensive GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. The meta benchmark got an update and reflects that performance lead:
The graphics card allows for comfortable gaming performance even with a 4K resolution.
What’s the problem? There are two. First, Nvidia promised double the performance of a RTX 2080, and this did not happen. With RTX and DLSS in Minecraft and Quake maybe, but not in general. And the extremely high energy usage of over 330 Watts is just a bad development for everyone. The new 12 pin power supply connector should not be a thing, Nvidia should not have felt the need to introduce it, just to raise the energy usage ceiling and get close to its performance target.
Still, with a reasonable price and high performance the RTX 3080 is a welcome addition to the high end video card options.
